Typical Conditions
Focus:
Versatility for sun, showers, and surprising temperature changes. Layers are crucial!
Base Layer:
- Lightweight wool or synthetic long-sleeved top
- Leggings or thin long johns under trousers in cooler weather
- Comfortable trousers (not jeans which stay wet and cold when damp)
Mid Layer:
- Fleece jacket or wool jumper
- Gilet or bodywarmer for core warmth without bulky arms
Outer Layer:
- Good quality, lightweight, fully waterproof and windproof jacket
- Waterproof trousers for wet days or dewy grass
Footwear:
- Wellies (great for puddles) with two pairs of socks
- Waterproof walking boots with good grip for muddy terrain
- Closed-toe shoes (no sandals) to protect from sticks and stones
Accessories:
- Sun hat with neck flap or wide-brimmed hat
- Thin gloves for cooler days
- Buff/neck gaiter (versatile as headband, hat, or neck cover)
Recommended Spares:
- Full change of clothes including underwear
- Extra socks (feet often get wet in spring)
Essential Reminders
- Pack layers that can be easily added or removed
- Spring weather can change quickly - be prepared for both warm sun and sudden showers
- Waterproof storage bag for wet clothes after the session
- Always pack a full set of spare clothes (top, trousers, underwear, and multiple pairs of socks).
- Long sleeves and long trousers are recommended year-round for protection from scratches, stings, ticks, and sun.

Dressing for Forest School
Essential clothing tips for outdoor learning in all weather
The Three-Layer System
Base Layer
Next to skin - wicks away moisture
- Merino wool or synthetic materials
- Avoid cotton - it holds moisture
Mid Layer
Insulation for warmth
- Fleece or wool jumpers
- Can be adjusted based on temperature
Outer Layer
Protection from elements
- Waterproof and windproof
- Breathable (allows sweat to escape)
Remember: Long sleeves and trousers are recommended year-round for protection from scratches, stings, and ticks.
Footwear & Accessories
- Sturdy waterproof boots or wellies with good grip (Tip: Trousers OVER wellies!)
- Two pairs of socks: thin (non-cotton) base layer + thick wool/thermal socks
- Waterproof gloves/mittens (mittens often warmer/easier for young kids; multiple pairs in winter)
- Warm hat that covers ears (winter) or wide-brimmed sun hat (summer)
- Neck warmer or snood (especially in colder months)
Essential Parent Prep
- Always Pack Spares: A full change (especially tops, trousers & multiple pairs of socks!) is a lifesaver.
- Sunscreen is Key (UK March-Oct): Apply SPF30+ before, even on cloudy days. Arrange reapplication if needed.
- Check Forecast (Pack for Surprises!): UK weather is changeable; layers help you adapt.
