- Thick wool blend socks
Mid Layer:
- Thick fleece or wool jumper
- Additional thin fleece layer for extreme cold
- Insulated gilet for core warmth
Outer Layer:
- Insulated, waterproof and windproof jacket
- Waterproof trousers
- Consider snow pants for very cold conditions
Footwear:
- Insulated, waterproof snow boots or walking boots
- Wellies with thick thermal socks and insoles (for milder winter days)
- Consider foot warmers for extremely cold conditions
Accessories:
- Warm hat that covers ears
- Insulated, waterproof gloves
- Neck warmer, scarf or buff
- Thermal face covering for very cold days
Recommended Spares:
- Complete change of clothes
- Extra jumper
- Multiple pairs of gloves and socks
- Spare hat
Essential Reminders
- Layer up - multiple thin layers trap warm air better than one thick layer
- Keep extremities (hands, feet, head) well insulated as most heat is lost here
- Hand and foot warmers can be essential on very cold days
- Check that waterproofs are still waterproof - they may need reproofing
- Always pack a full set of spare clothes (top, trousers, underwear, and multiple pairs of socks).
- Long sleeves and long trousers are recommended year-round for protection from scratches, stings, ticks, and sun.

Dressing for Forest School
Essential clothing tips for outdoor learning in all weather
The Three-Layer System
Base Layer
Next to skin - wicks away moisture
- Merino wool or synthetic materials
- Avoid cotton - it holds moisture
Mid Layer
Insulation for warmth
- Fleece or wool jumpers
- Can be adjusted based on temperature
Outer Layer
Protection from elements
- Waterproof and windproof
- Breathable (allows sweat to escape)
Remember: Long sleeves and trousers are recommended year-round for protection from scratches, stings, and ticks.
Footwear & Accessories
- Sturdy waterproof boots or wellies with good grip (Tip: Trousers OVER wellies!)
- Two pairs of socks: thin (non-cotton) base layer + thick wool/thermal socks
- Waterproof gloves/mittens (mittens often warmer/easier for young kids; multiple pairs in winter)
- Warm hat that covers ears (winter) or wide-brimmed sun hat (summer)
- Neck warmer or snood (especially in colder months)
Essential Parent Prep
- Always Pack Spares: A full change (especially tops, trousers & multiple pairs of socks!) is a lifesaver.
- Sunscreen is Key (UK March-Oct): Apply SPF30+ before, even on cloudy days. Arrange reapplication if needed.
- Check Forecast (Pack for Surprises!): UK weather is changeable; layers help you adapt.
